Communities for a Lifetime

Three recipients of a pilot grant to study how to make their communities friendly for residents of all ages were recently announced. Communities for a Lifetime, a collaborative effort among state agencies, educational institutions and non-profit organizations, encourages cities and towns to welcome, value, and support the meaningful participation of people of all abilities across the entire lifespan.

These communities will receive grants to complete a 5-month planning process that will include determining their local need and walkability to food, medical care, and amenities. Other aspects will include setting safety standards, finding ways to locally promote intergenerational interactions and civic engagement, and maximizing independence for their residents.

The winning communities, which will receive $16,000 planning grants, are:
•    Huntington
•    Linton
•    Valparaiso

Proposed changes to REPA II

Jill Shedd, Associate Dean for Teacher Education at Indiana University-Bloomington, hosted a webinar yesterday on proposed changes to the Rules for Educator Preparation and Accountability (REPA II). This proposal will greatly impact teachers, administrators, parents of children with disabilities, advocacy groups, and those involved in teacher education. Below you will find the link to the recorded webinar and the downloadable documents.

On June 21st at 9:00 a.m. there will be a Public Hearing at the Indiana Department of Education in Indianapolis. If you have concerns about these proposed changes to the teacher rules, you are invited to attend this hearing and make your voice heard.

The National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development is offering Training Institutes on improving mental health services for children, adolescents, and young adults with or at risk for mental health challenges and their families. The biennial Training Institutes are co-sponsered The Annie E. Casey Foundation and are designed for a variety of individuals including state, tribal, territorial, and local administrators, planners, providers, clinicians, care managers, families, youth, advocates, managed care organizations, educators, evaluators, technical assistance providers, and others concerned with improving services for children, youth, and families.
