Community Arts Classes: Arts for All Abilities

Very Special Arts Indiana (VSAI) is enrolling now for our Community Arts Classes for all ages and abilities! Classes start June 1st and a few spaces are left on Wednesdays (4:00-5:30 pm) or Saturdays (10:30 am-noon).  Each class includes a clay and 2-D visual arts activity. Tuition is on a sliding scale, starting at $20/8-week session.

Dolls with disabilities

A British toy maker is now making dolls that look just like their owners--disabilities and all. Makie has so far made dolls that use hearing aids, a cane, and one that has a facial birthmark. And according to their blog, they're now working on making a wheelchair.

New early childhood newsletter

Plan Your Visit to CeDIR

Did you know that you can come visit us at the CeDIR library to browse the collection and get personalized services based on your specific needs? We strive to maintain regular hours of operation, but given our small staff, sometimes meetings or offsite programs can take us away from the office. Calling ahead can help ensure staff are available to help you during your visit.

Location
We are located at 1905 N. Range Road in Bloomington, Indiana; however, the easiest way to find us is to type “Indiana Institute on Disability and Community” into Google maps. This will provide an exact result. Other map services are less specific about our location.

Hours
We are generally open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and closed during our lunch hour from 11:30 to 12:30. We are closed most holidays and often closed for two weeks at the end of the year.

Closings
There are times that we need to be closed to attend meetings or other programs. We strive to communicate these closings through our website and blogs. Please check these and call or email us before coming to the library to ensure that we will be open and available to help you.

Bicycle Camp for Individuals with Disabilities Now Accepting Applications



iCan Bike Camp, an event that teaches individuals with disabilities to ride a conventional two-wheeled bicycle, is coming to Bloomington later this summer and is now accepting rider applications. The program will take place August 17-21, 2015, at the Frank Southern Ice Arena. The five-day camp requires riders to attend only one 75-minute session per day with all the sessions meeting during the after-school hours.

To be eligible to enroll, riders must be at least eight years old, have a disability and be able to walk without an assistive device such as a walker or cane. Riders must be able to side-step quickly to both sides. Riders must have a minimum inseam measurement of 20 inches and weigh no more than 220 pounds.

The iCan Bike program is offered through iCan Shine, a national nonprofit organization that collaborates with local organizations to host camps in their communities. This camp is being hosted in Bloomington by the Down Syndrome Family Connection and the Bloomington Chapter of the Autism Society of Indiana. Sponsors include the Herald-Times, Monroe County Autism Foundation, and Indiana University Health. The Bicycle Garage has joined as a local bike shop partner for the event.

Game imitates life with dementia

According to an article on Mashable yesterday, a 21 year old student has created a video game as a final honors project for his degree that simulates what life would be like if the player had Alzheimer's or other dementia. "Alexander Tarvet, a student in Abertay University's Game Design & Production Management program in Dundee, Scotland, aims to use the game to raise awareness of the brain disease, in which a person's memory, thinking and problem-solving skills progressively worsen over time."

May is national mental health awareness month. According to the Centers for Disease Control about 1 in 4 Americans is currently living with mental illness.
