Vocational Rehabiliation video

The Institute’s Center on Community Living and Careers (CCLC) has released a Spanish version of its popular video, “Working with Indiana Vocational Rehabilitation Services.” The video, originally published in English in 2015, is illustrated in “quick draw” style, which takes viewers through the VR referral, eligibility, and application process. CCLC created both videos for Indiana VR to help Hoosiers with disabilities and their families as they learn new skills, look for a job, or start a career. Indiana’s VR counselors, secondary transition teachers, job coaches, employment service providers, and human resource professionals are using the videos at job fairs, conference exhibits, parent nights, and as they work with their individual job seekers.

The Spanish version, Servicios de Rehabilitacion Vocationales de Indiana includes new voiceover, translated on-screen text, and Spanish captions and is available to watch and share on YouTube.

Softening: Loving a Child with Special Needs

In Softening: Loving a Child with Special Needs, filmmaker Kelly O’Brien speaks honestly about her struggle to cope for the first five years following the birth of Teddy, born with extensive brain damage resulting from an in-utero viral infection. The rewards as well as the challenges of caring for him are evident in Softening, a lyrical cinematic diary O’Brien created to celebrate her son’s inherent beauty and the joy he brings to his family’s life. His big sister’s vast affection and his father’s poignant observation that all Teddy’s physical limitations fall away when he dreams help to dispel the fear and discomfort often surrounding the topic of disability. In leaving out the grittier details of Teddy’s daily regimen to focus on the moments of intimacy and play, the film also documents O’Brien’s gradual process of opening up emotionally—her softening—about her son’s difficult diagnosis.
