Shut up about your perfect kid!

Despite a tendency to cringe at the title of this book, Shut up about your perfect kid: A survival guide for ordinary parents of special children is a seriously frank, seriously funny look at two moms (sisters) who have children with disabilities. Through IEP meetings, team meetings, and various medical and psychiatric appointments, be prepared to laugh and cry as the authors describe their kids' inclusion classrooms, private school, and life in general.

Mental Illness Awareness Week

October 5 to the 11th is National Mental Illness Awareness Week.

In 1990, the U.S. Congress established the first week of October as Mental Illness Awareness Week (MIAW) in recognition of the National Alliance on Mental Illness's efforts to raise mental illness awareness. Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day (BDAD) is held each year on the Thursday of MIAW. Bipolar Disorder Awareness Day is this Thursday October 7.

Want to learn more on MIAW or BDAD check out this the National Alliance on Mental Illness's webpage at http://www.nami.org/Template.cfm?Section=Mental_Illness_Awareness_Week

A New Guide to Bipolar Disorder

One of the most recent additions to CeDIR's collection is The Bipolar Child, written by Demitri Papolos, M.D., and Janice Papolos. Revised and updated, this book tackles the challenges of the disorder for both parents and children, and also addresses the latest treatments available. Psychological and genetic aspects of the issue are discussed, as well as the impact the disorder has on the family and how one can best cope with it. The authors have even included a bipolar questionnaire at the back of the book for parents and a list of resources to consult. If interested, check this new book out at CeDIR today, or click here to find it at a library near you.
