Alzheimer's: A textured, tactile journey of abstraction
Undone is a beautiful and bittersweet stop-motion film by animator Hayley Morris. This film is inspired by Morris' grandfather and captures, in abstract, the progression of Alzheimer’s disease. This 6 1/2 minute short film is exquisite in its tenderness and creativity.

Mobile App Monday - Language Builder
Language Builder is designed to help children accomplish the following educational goals: 1) Improve sentence ideation ; 2) Improve sentence formation; and 3) Improve receptive and expressive language. Extensive use of audio clips promotes improved auditory processing for special needs children with autism spectrum disorders or sensory processing disorders. Arts Mentoring and You
South Central ArtsWORK Indiana is presenting a series of free training events on arts mentoring this fall for emerging artists, performers, and writers with a disability of any kind (including intellectual disabilities) in the greater Bloomington area. Attendees will participate in three brief sessions with hands-on exercises to help them understand what arts mentoring is, how it works, and how it can help them achieve their goals as artists.
At this time, there is no area program established to match emerging artists with disabilities with an experienced artist-mentor. The purpose of the trainings is to set the groundwork for such a program by defining what local needs it could meet, and by identifying and preparing individuals who might participate as mentees (attendance at the trainings does not require nor guarantee a commitment to future participation in a mentoring program).
Target audiences include individuals who:
*Have an arts-related interest or skill they wish to develop;
*Live in Monroe or surrounding counties;
*Are age 18 or older;
*Have a disability of any kind; and
*Can attend all 3 training sessions.

To register, complete and submit the registration form and pre-workshop questionnaire by SEPTEMBER 1, 2012. It is not possible to register for individual events, just for the series. Schools and IUPUI collaborate in Indy
The IUPUI SITE (Skills for Independence, Transition, and Employment) program has a new website. A collaboration of the Indianapolis Public Schools and IUPUI, SITE enables individuals with intellectual disabilities to participate in postsecondary programming on the IUPUI campus. Click here to find out more about the young men and women who are changing their lives through SITE.
SITE is expanding in the 2012-13 academic year to include the school districts surrounding Indianapolis. The Indiana Institute on Disability and Community was awarded a grant from the U.S. Department of Education in 2010 to create the Indiana Partnership for Education and Careers project. A key component of the project is partnering with the SITE program at IUPUI.
The project is also interested in establishing additional programs at other institutions of higher education to expand opportunities for individuals with intellectual disabilities. Visit Think College Indiana for more information.

The Ball
Who doesn't love a high school prom? The Ball is a wonderful film from Australia that takes a look into the world of students with special needs who get ready to attend their debutante ball. The students at the Ashwood School all have mild cognitive impairments and have varying abilities. They are also at the age when they start becoming interested in the opposite sex and their own futures. The film includes first loves, fist fights and falls on the dance floor interspersed with interviews with parents, the school principal, and intimate moments in their day-to-day lives at home.

Attainment's Explore Social Skills
Attainment's Explore Social Skills is a program that teaches 50 social skills specific to a high school environment. Each skill has five or six steps that have to be taught and mastered to fulfill the goal. These skills can be modified to meet standards specific to your school. Writing Measurable Functional and Transition IEP Goals
Writing Measurable Functional and Transition IEP Goals is a new book that can help teachers who are working with students with severe and multiple disabilities. These students typically do not get as much direct, individual instruction as they need in functional and transition skills areas such as social skills, communication, transportation training, leisure-recreation, self-care, and many others. Students with moderate or mild disabilities may also lack this instruction. This book addresses all these groups with its focus squarely on two instructional steps: writing measurable goals (target behaviors,) and identifying steps on the way to those goals (task analysis).

Life Skill Stories
Attainment's Life Skill Stories are literature-based life skill curricula for secondary students who read at a third grade level and above. The set includes six books with a total of 120 stories. They focus on typical teenage experiences, and the skills we all need to navigate life. Each story is 5 pages long with a Flesch-Kincaid 2-3 reading difficulty level. The characters in the stories are teenagers, friends, and family members. Some stories are humorous, some are a little mysterious, and others have a touch of drama. Each story concludes with What Do You Think? and What Would You Do? sections.

Transition to Retirement
From Australia comes Transition to Retirement, a pilot program designed to help older employees with disabilities transition out of paid work. They are supported to join mainstream community or volunteer groups where they can participate and enjoy their retirement years. This DVD includes six stories following people who are participating in the transition to retirement program. Includes comments by project leaders.
