The Ball

Who doesn't love a high school prom? The Ball is a wonderful film from Australia that takes a look into the world of students with special needs who get ready to attend their debutante ball. The students at the Ashwood School all have mild cognitive impairments and have varying abilities. They are also at the age when they start becoming interested in the opposite sex and their own futures. The film includes first loves, fist fights and falls on the dance floor interspersed with interviews with parents, the school principal, and intimate moments in their day-to-day lives at home.

Transition to Retirement

From Australia comes Transition to Retirement, a pilot program designed to help older employees with disabilities transition out of paid work. They are supported to join mainstream community or volunteer groups where they can participate and enjoy their retirement years. Love Limits

Love Limits is a film about finding lasting relationships. On the surface they seem like an odd couple. Warren can talk but can't walk. Cory can walk but can't talk. He is 83 years old, an African American from Brooklyn. She is 36 years old, white and from a farm in upstate New York. What Cory and Warren do share are similar disabilities: both have cerebral palsy and were diagnosed with "mild mental retardation" as children. They met at a day rehabilitation program 15 years ago, and while they still don't live together, they have had a long and deep relationship.

Respect: The Joy of Aides

Respect: The Joy of Aides is a documentary exploring the relationship between people with disabilities and their aides. The documentary focuses on Sweeney's unique view on how aides should be hired and directed as employees. Sweeney shows how one becomes friends with aides but also maintains the balance of a professional relationship. This documentary features a comedian and playwright who talks about her own experiences, Sweeney's exploration of relationships with her aides, and you will hear from the people who have worked for both women.

Body & soul: Diana & Kathy

Body & soul: Diana & Kathy is a film about two women, one who has Down syndrome and the other Cerebral Palsy, who decided decades ago to share their lives. The women have become tireless advocates of and lobbyists for people with disabilities. Their fierce desire to live independently and together won out and the friends lived together for 37 years before Kathy's death in 2009.

Letting Go

Having a child of any age move away from home can be emotionally difficult, to say the least. But when that child has a disability, it can be even more so. The film, Letting go: When your child leaves home, shows four parents come to terms with the emotions involved with having a child with a disability move away from home. The parents talk about their decisions to place their child in a residential facility. This film is aimed at helping parents and professional direct-care staff understand the deep grieving the parents go through before and a long time after the placement is made.

Speak Out for Understanding

The film Speak out for understanding is a disability awareness documentary produced by a high school student. It's goal is to promote communication, understanding, and equity for people with disabilities.The DVD also contains a Facilitator's Guide and pamphlet.

The documentary involves a dynamic service-learning project titled Speak Out for Understanding, where a group of high school students with varying abilities learn to speak out for themselves and others. The students decided to create this film to raise awareness by telling their own stories to selected audiences for the purpose of bringing about change.

The documentary Unlikely Travellers directed by Michael Noonan is about six individuals with intellectual disabilities that go on an adventure of a lifetime to Egypt. The movie begins in Queensland, Australia where the individuals prepare emotionally for the trip. The second half of the movie is the trip itself. They each learn to face their fears and learn just what they are capable of. This candid two-week adventure is about chasing dreams, exploring the unknown, and changes lives.

Alzheimer's Disease: Facing the Facts is an hour-long Emmy-nominated, CINE Golden Eagle Award-winning documentary. The film covers the personal and public effects of this devastating condition through interviews with families, doctors, and scientists.
