Modern Web Accessibility - Revisiting Fundamentals and Looking at New Challenges

Tomorrow, the Great Lakes ADA Center will host another webinar in their Accessible Technology Webinar Series. This session will feature Jared Smith from WebAIM on web accessibility.

The webinar will be both a refresher on tried and true accessibility techniques as well as a fresh look at web accessibility challenges facing today’s web design requirements. While awareness of web accessibility is increasing, it can often be an overwhelming thing to implement.

The presenter, Jared Smith from WebAIM, will provide an overview of web accessibility with specific things that you can begin to implement today. It will also provide an overview of tools and resources for evaluating your site's current accessibility.

ADA Legal Webinar Series

The Great Lakes ADA Center, on behalf of the ADA National Network, will host a new session in their ADA Legal Webinar Series. In this webinar, attorneys Barry Taylor and Rachel Weisberg will review the top ADA cases of 2016.

Courts across the country decided a number of significant ADA cases in 2016, and this session will provide an in-depth review of the top ADA cases from the past year. In addition to reviewing the specific facts and ruling in each case, there will also be a discussion of the impact these cases may have on future ADA litigation. This webinar will cover a wide variety of ADA issues under Titles I, II and III. Start the New Year off right with a better understanding of the most important ADA cases decided in 2016!

The ADA, Sensory Disabilities, and Assistive Technology

The Great Lakes ADA Center is announces an upcoming session titled The ADA, Sensory Disabilities, and Assistive Technology: Core Technologies for Non-visual Access scheduled for Wednesday, February 24, 2016 from 3:00-4:30 p.m. (Eastern Time).

This webinar will combine aspects of the ADA as it relates to Assistive Technologies that benefit people with low vision or individuals who are blind.  Presenters include Diego Demaya, Legal Specialist with the Southwest ADA Center, and Curtis Chong, Assistive Technologist with the New Mexico Commission for the Blind. During the presentation we will discuss:

  • Recent ADA cases involving access for persons who are blind and individuals with low vision;
  • Talk about employment-related technology access issues for individuals who are blind or experience low vision; and
  • Go over some examples of auxiliary aids that are useful in places of public accommodation for individuals who are blind or experience low vision.

Creating Advocates for Livable Communities Web Seminar

The American Society on Aging, as part of their Disabilities in Aging Series, will host a web seminar on Thursday, December 3, 2015 featuring the Indiana Institute’s Center on Aging and Community’s Advocates for Livable Communities project. The Advocates for Livable Communities project is designed to identify ways to engage the aging and disability communities around the significance of livability. Participants in this web seminar will be able to:

  • List three reasons why it is desirable to join together older adults and people with disabilities to promote community livability;
  • Identify four features of a livable community;
  • Identify methods that can be used to promote collaboration between older adults and people with disabilities to make communities more livable for all; and,
  • Describe several ways to effectively advocate.

Proposed changes to REPA II

Jill Shedd, Associate Dean for Teacher Education at Indiana University-Bloomington, hosted a webinar yesterday on proposed changes to the Rules for Educator Preparation and Accountability (REPA II). This proposal will greatly impact teachers, administrators, parents of children with disabilities, advocacy groups, and those involved in teacher education. Below you will find the link to the recorded webinar and the downloadable documents.

On June 21st at 9:00 a.m. there will be a Public Hearing at the Indiana Department of Education in Indianapolis. If you have concerns about these proposed changes to the teacher rules, you are invited to attend this hearing and make your voice heard.

Free Webinar on Accessible Transient Lodging

The U.S. Access Board and the ADA National Network will offer a free webinar on Accessible Transient Lodging TODAY, Thursday, February 3, 2011 from 2:30 – 4:00 p.m. Eastern.

In addition to overnight accommodations, hotels, motels, and other places of transient lodging offer many different types of amenities, such as swimming pools, fitness facilities, spas, restaurants, and conference rooms.

This session will provide an overview of requirements for transient lodging facilities in the ADA and ABA Accessibility Guidelines, including those that address sleeping rooms, bathrooms, and other spaces and amenities.

Webinar on Transportation Issues

If you are interested in transportation issues and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), plan to participate in an upcoming free webinar offered by the ADA National Network and Easter Seals Project ACTION. Scheduled for Tuesday, December 14, 2010 from 2:00-3:30 (eastern). This session is the third of seven Webinars on Transportation and the ADA. Each session will focus on one of the seven Topic Guides on ADA Transportation, a series of Technical Assistance publications released by DREDF earlier this year. Register for this one webinar, or for the entire series.

This webinar session will cover the Topic Guide 3: Eligibility for ADA Paratransit. The session will first address the categories and types of eligibility, including conditional eligibility. Important best-practice do's and don'ts will also be discussed, including basing decisions on the most limiting condition, using a comprehensive task/skill list, applying the reasonable person test, identifying specific abilities and/or limitations, basing decisions on a case-by-case analysis of each applicant, and interpreting safety issues properly. Additionally, this will address the eligibility determination process, including the 21-day process, functional assessments, the appeal process for eligibility denials, and visitors. There will be time for participant questions.
