Smart ways to spend your time

Do you know a kid who is a couch potato? Maybe she spends all of her time on the computer. Does he need ideas for places to go instead of just sitting around? 2010 Wheel-a-Thon

The Indianapolis Resource Center for Independent Living (IRCIL) is announcing its 2010 Wheel-a-Thon to be held on Saturday, June 5th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Ruth Lilly Fitness Center on the campus of the University of Indianapolis. Those with and without a disability can participate in the Wheel-a-Thon using a wheelchair to navigate the route. Proceeds from the Wheel-a-Thon will be used by IRCIL to help promote the full inclusion of people with disabilities in the community. Also at the event will be information booths from various vendors, free health screenings, a demonstration of adaptive self defense, and dancing.

Trainings in Mental Health

The National Technical Assistance Center for Children's Mental Health at the Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development is announcing trainings on local systems of care for children and adolescents with or at risk for mental health challenges and their families.

The trainings will be held in Washington, DC from July 14 - 18, 2010. The intent of the Institutes is to provide in-depth, practical information on how to develop, operate, and sustain systems of care and how to provide high-quality, effective clinical interventions and supports within them.

Scholarship available

In these tough economic times, it is difficult for many people to afford college courses. It's sometimes even more difficult for those who have a disability. Help is available, though, for people with Down syndrome who are interested in applying for a post-secondary program or just want to take a few enrichment classes.

For the past six years, the Joshua O’Neill and Zeshan Tabani Enrichment Fund has awarded $2,000 to five applicants per year, and this year is no different. Even those who have not yet decided whether to take a course or have not been accepted into a program are encouraged to apply for this scholarship. The funds may be used at a college, university, learning center, or an employment training program. The application must be postmarked by July 12, 2010, and scholarship winners will be notified by August 31, 2010.

Poster Competition Announcement

The City of Bloomington Council for Community Accessibility (CCA) is calling for entries in its newly created disability and accessibility awareness poster competition. The competition runs through the end of May, and prizes will be awarded to selected entries. Winners will be announced at the July celebration of the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.

All poster submissions should highlight a disability and/or an accessibility issue and may include graphic design, drawing, painting, or photography. Free Webinar on Accessible Parking

The U.S. Access Board and the ADA National Network are offering a free webinar on Accessible Parking on Thursday, May 6, 2010 from 2:30-4:00 p.m. (Eastern time). Access to parking spaces and passenger loading zones will be discussed along with upcoming revisions to the current standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and the Architectural Barriers Act (ABA). This session is part of their collaborative webinar series titled AccessibilityOnline.
